Ready Honda's History

The History of Ready Honda.

703 Bloor     700 Bloor     2678 Bloor    2678 Bloor Shop

July
1951
Eric Redinger, Ready's founder formed Ready Motors Import Ltd. and began the operation by selling used cars at 1061 Bathurst Street, at Dupont in Toronto.
1952 The business relocated to Queen and Jarvis Streets to a larger lot.
1955 The business moved to indoor facilities at 423 College Street. at Bathurst. This property  has been owned and operated by Rochester Furniture since 1956.
1956 The business moved to 877 College Street at Ossington where two lots were combined into a single large lot. Currently it is operated by Azores Car Sales.
1957 Ready Motors became the sole importer and distributor in Canada for German built Lloyd cars. The first shipload of 186 cars arrived and eventually Ready had 100 independent franchises selling the cars.
1958 Ready relocated to 703-705 Bloor Street W. at Christie, offering a 4 car Showroom and 8 Bays for service. The business remained at this site until 1976.
1960 The manufacturer of Lloyd in Germany went bust! Ready, fortunately, did not go bust and took on Fiat cars from Milan, Italy as a franchise.
1973 Honda was taken on as a second line to Fiat under the name of Grand Prix Honda, a division of Ready. As of this date, Ready had the longest association with Fiat of any Canadian business. Ready (Grand Prix Honda) was the second dealer in Canada to take on a Honda Civic franchise.
1974 The oil crisis hit and gas prices skyrocketed. Honda sales soared, while Fiat did not! Fiat and Ready parted company due to corporate politics, after a 15 year association. The best year for Fiat sales reached 250 new cars.
1975 A second business location was opened at 2678 Bloor Street West at Jane, by the Old Mill Subway. Business was better at this site than at 703 Bloor Street.
1976 The business at 703 Bloor Street West was closed and all operations moved to the 2678 Bloor site.
1977 This year produced Ready's best year in sales! 1035 new cars were sold.
December 1980 Ready Motors Import Ltd. split into two companies; the original, which looked after real estate holdings and Ready Import Limited, the car company.
1983 Bob Redinger, the younger son of the founder Eric Redinger, returned to Ready as General Manager, after a 5 year employment term with General Motors of Canada (the manufacturer).

Bob Redinger - President and General Manager of Ready Honda

is given the 2009 Canadian Automobile Dealer Association Dealer Laureate Award in the category of Business Innovator. Here is some background about the award: Between 1972 and 2001, CADA and the provincial dealer associations presented the Dealer of Excellence Award to Canada’s finest dealers, first under the sponsorship of TIME Magazine and later in partnership with Maclean’s/L’actualité. The Dealer of Excellence award was generally regarded as Canada’s most prestigious and highly sought-after dealer award. Over the course of thirty years, change swept through the auto industry, with tremendous impact on the manner in which dealers operate. As a result, CADA recognized in 2002 that it was time to re-think its national dealer recognition program. The CADA Laureate is the result of three years of research and development by a special ad hoc committee charged with this task. The Laureate program has a broader scope than the previous Dealer of Excellence award. For the first time, CADA’s national dealer recognition program acknowledges the different ways in which dealers contribute to the industry and their communities with Laureate titles to be bestowed for career achievements in Retail Operations, Business Innovation and Ambassadorship. The Laureate program also introduces a benchmark for the assessment of nominees the new CADA Charter. Dealers honoured with the title of Laureate will be those deemed to epitomize the spirit of the Charter. The Laureate program was launched in September, 2005, as a partnership between CADA and Industrial Alliance Pacific Insurance and Financial Services Inc., the exclusive sponsor of the Laureate program. The role of IAP in the Laureate program is to champion dealer excellence and to enhance the visibility and appreciation of the contribution made by new car and truck dealers day in and day out in virtually every Canadian community. The mission of the Canadian Automobile Dealers Association is to deal with issues of a national nature which affect the well-being of new car and truck dealers in Canada. CADA is committed to action in the following areas: CADA also supports the activities and services of the following organizations and industry stakeholders: - CADA Charitable Foundation - Canadian Automotive Institute- CARS Council- Automotive press- International Automotive Hall of Fame- Government Relations|The development and modification of federal policies and legislation affecting new car and truck dealers.Industry Relations The protection of the interests of new car and truck dealers under the franchise system. Legal Providing legal assistance to new car and truck dealers with respect to industry relations issues. Member Services Providing ventures and services which will benefit new car and truck dealers, financially or otherwise. Public Relations Enhancing the image of the new car and truck dealer in Canada. CADA’s ad hoc program committee identified the benefits that the Laureate program should deliver to CADA, the provincial dealer associations and the winning dealers. For CADA, the Laureate program must: Enhance the credibility of automobile dealers with the Canadian consumer Recognize the best dealer-"Best of Breed" Profile & favour the image of CADA as the national dealer organization For provincial dealer associations, the Laureate program must: Recognize the best dealer-"Best of Breed" Enhance the relationship with suppliers, sponsors and other industry stakeholders Profile & favour the image of the provincial/regional association as a dealer organization For winning dealers, the Laureate program must: Enhance the dealer’s image with the consumer, the dealer’s manufacturer and the dealer’s peer group Be exclusive and prestigious in nature, with awards reserved for the select few Create a public relations and marketing impact in the dealer’s community The Laureate was crafted to become the highest honour a Canadian dealer can attain over the course of his or her career. This is the underlying theme of the program objectives that were established at the outset by the ad hoc committee. To reach the pinnacle in an industry crowded with award programs, the Laureate will distinguish itself via the rigour of the nomination and evaluation processes. Nomination Approximately 3,500 industry members will have the authority to nominate dealers for the Laureate award, including association member dealers, manufacturing company staff, supplier company staff and association executives. An independent 3rd party administrator will handle the nomination process in a confidential manner. Dealers will not be allowed to nominate themselves. Evaluation A three-phase process will be used to evaluate candidates: In phase one, a list of candidates will be compiled comprising the names put forward in the nomination process. The list will be culled using criteria established by a special industry committee. The purpose of phase one is to ensure that all dealers, regardless of the category of nomination, are first validated as excellent all-around dealers. Candidates who meet the criteria will be welcomed as official nominees for the Laureate title. In phase two, the official nominees will receive a personalized letter inviting them to visit the secure section of the Laureate website to accept nomination and complete a questionnaire specific to the category in which they have been nominated (Retailer, Innovator, Ambassador). The questionnaire will be based on the CADA Charter , which spells out the evaluation criteria used in the Laureate program while also serving as a guideline for all dealers who aspire to excellence. The dealer information captured via the questionnaires will be tabulated by an impartial 3rd-party administrator and the administrator will create a list of five finalists for each of the three categories. In phase three, the Richard Ivey School of Business, University of Western Ontario, will select one Laureate from each list of five finalists. Dealers can be nominated for the Laureate title in three categories: Retailer Laureate for outstanding achievement within an individual dealership Innovator Laureate for initiatives that significantly enhance performance or broaden the scope of business for new car and truck dealers Ambassador Laureate for extraordinary service to the community and/or industry The special committee that created the Laureate program identified a need for an objective benchmark against which dealer performance can be evaluated as it relates to the category of nomination. Having such a benchmark would add rigour and consistency to the selection process while providing guidance for all association member dealers who strive for excellence. The CADA Charter fills this need. The CADA Charter comprises CADA’s Mission Statement, the national Dealer Code of Ethics and the Criteria for Dealer Excellence. It is the Dealer Code of Ethics and the Criteria for Dealer Excellence that reflect the criteria used in the Laureate selection process. Nominee questionnaires are formulated on the basis of these criteria and their accompanying Guide to the Criteria. The National Dealer Code of Ethics Laureates adhere to the highest standards and principles of ethical conduct. Laureates always conduct business with integrity, competence and accountability. The Criteria for Dealer Excellence Retail Operations Retailer Laureates excel in all areas of dealership operations, achieving consistently excellent financial results. They are leaders in terms of market performance, franchise performance and customer service, and they utilize systems and processes to enhance operations. Business Innovation Innovator Laureates implement initiatives that enhance dealership performance or expand the scope of the business in search of new sources of revenues. They are leaders in terms of organizational development, revenue growth, competitive positioning, efficiencies & responsiveness, and improvement & learning. Ambassadorship Ambassador Laureates achieve exceptional results beyond the walls of the dealership. They are renowned for their service to the community and/or the retail auto industry. They excel in their industry, community and business relationships and they fulfill all social and environmental responsibilities. The Guide to the Criteria CADA has prepared detailed explanations and examples of outstanding performance for each of the Criteria for Dealer Excellence.
